ISSUES ON UNIFORMS

The use of school uniforms has been a humongous issue in Indonesia amongst students, teachers, and the education minister. For more than nine years of life, students were unable to express themselves because of wearing school uniforms, especially in private schools. Some might think that wearing school uniform are a good way to teach the students discipline, but they have forgotten one thing that matters the most. They hide these students from the fact that they are all coming from many varieties of economic classes; to respect everyone’s economical life. It’s been a yearly record that in Indonesia, most schools requires their students to use uniforms. According to the World’s Book of Records, Indonesia is one of the biggest countries with the highest school uniform standards. How amazing is that?

Personally, I don’t agree with schools forcing us to use uniforms with rules and policies. Showing contrast, the teachers themselves don’t know any specific reasons of why we should use uniforms. Furthermore, most uniforms are unfashionable and uncreative. Students need to follow daily trends (as in shirts) in order to express themselves more while uniforms are forcing us to keep away from being fancy with our clothes. It is also uncomfortable for some students who have sensitive skin. Some are made from cheap materials so they don’t last very long. That means extra spending after the expensive school fees. Not only that these uniforms are limited. In this case, only the school sells the product. There are consequences if we forget to bring one of the uniform terms. Also it gives a bad reputation for the school if we do something bad out of school and are wearing our school uniforms.

However, school uniforms have advantages. Students are taught to be more disciplined and obey the school rules by uniform usage. How can they obey the rules when they wanted to be free and create a positive energy when their creativity is caged? The school also teaches the student to be more responsible for all their uniform belongings because if one item is lost, the shame will be on his/her shoulders for the whole day. This isn’t right because it could cause students’ psychological stress when his/her friends mock them. Above all, school uniforms allow the teachers to see who is tidy, responsible, careful and ready for school because uniforms usually picture what students are really like when they are at home and I didn’t deny this.
Students were also taught to be careful because if they use their uniform to do sports and their pants rip to block a ball, the embarrassment aren’t going to be easily replaced until they mend their pants or buy another one (another expense). Stocks of pants aren’t always going to be available, so boys must watch out more. This one is yet considered as a disadvantage of school uniforms.
To sum up, uniforms are unsuitable for students, especially teenagers as it is thought to be unfashionable, uncreative, uncomfortable and limited. So what do you say now? School uniforms aren’t suitable, right? After all, uniforms don’t help students develop much in their creativity in their everyday school life and that’s bad.
